History

Kantha, the art of giving new life. To hang, drape, spread out or reinvent: handcrafted textiles that invite you to create a home full of life. An ancestral craft tradition dating back nearly a thousand years, Kantha is an integral part of India's cultural heritage and one of the country's oldest forms of embroidery. Born from a spirit of resourcefulness and ingenuity, Kantha involves layering several vintage saris and stitching them together using the traditional Kantha stitch — a simple running stitch worked in closely spaced, parallel rows. The repetition of this gesture gives the fabric its distinctive softly rippled, quilted texture, achieved without any added padding.

Passed down from childhood among women in the rural regions of West Bengal, Odisha in India, and Bangladesh, these one-of-a-kind pieces bring together vintage saris in a vibrant mix of colours, offering a cherished textile a second life. Long before the concept existed, Kantha already embodied the principles of textile upcycling and circular craftsmanship.

Caravane has carefully selected a collection of unique pieces with simple compositions, then enhanced them through additional artisanal embellishments, including suzani-inspired embroidery and hand block-printed motifs. The combination of these traditional techniques makes each piece even more distinctive and desirable.
